Consumer reports best truck....by a mile

by britnusa: Written: Mar 03 '05

Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Reliable, comfortable, attractive, easy to drive
Cons: interior a bit spartan
The Bottom Line: This truck does nothing exceptionally and everything well. A pleasing experience awaits you.

We bought this truck after suffering through 3 years ownership of an Olds Alero. My wife really, really wanted a truck. I said "No, think of the expense, what are we going to use a truck for?"

Thankfully my wife completely ignored me and we purchased this truck which has turned out to be the best purchase we ever made. My friends wife works at a Toyota dealership, we were looking for a car but after 3 hours took a Tundra crew cab, double cab, full cab whatever they are called out for a run. I was sold.

As far as ease of driving were concerned it felt positive and comfortable. we purchased the SR5 model so did not benefit from leather seats and all the trimmings but all said and done the seats were comfortable, it was roomy, not particularly stylish but very business like. The engine is a V8 producing 245 bhp and 282 lbs of torque. I have no idea what that means but it has hauled around everything I have needed with consumate ease.

The bed is 6" than the F150 Supercrew, which has been very useful while I have been remodeling.

The cab is extremely roomy and will carry 5 adults with ease, another nifty feature is that the rear window will slide down as all other windows, that one always gets an oohhh!

The engine is capable, quiet, 15 around town, nearly 20 on a run. The interior is fairly spartan, typically Toyota it does not scream luxury and you could be forgiven for thinking you were in a Camry. It does have a nice JBL stereo with a 6-cd in dash loader

From what I understand from those who know, the Tundra does not have the greatest pulling power in the world but I think it tops out at about 5800lbs.

I have used this truck nearly every weekend and I love it. I t is not the fastest, it will not pull the most, it is not the biggest, but it does everything you need and it does it well. It was not that expensive coming in just under $30,000 so I feel with the reliability of Toyota buy this truck and you will have to find other things to worry about.
