I work for a Japanese steamship company in the Regional Documentation Department. Our job is to produce the Bills of Lading to our customers in a timely manner. This includes not only producing the actual bills, but also delivering it to the customers. Since we are inland and most of our customers are next to ports such as LA or Seattle, we rely heavily on DHL to send documents overnight to our customers.
Our company has chosen DHL as our soul carrier for these important documents. They offer a great rate, top notch customer service, a constant supply of envelopes and boxes, and have friendly employees who pick up and deliver our packages daily. DHL has supplied our computers at work with DHL shipping software downloaded on our computers. This enables us to Ship right from our desks which is very convenient. This time saver was just added to our company in the past 4 months. Before that we had to hand write all of the shipping details on carbon copy slips which ended up being very timely and the margin of error was a little higher since people's handwriting can tend to be a bit messy (mine included). Our company ships about 30-40 plus packages a day, and handwriting the slips was just about enough to give you Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! Now, all we have to do is enter the info in the easy to use shipping page, and print out the receipt right on our laser printers. Thank God for technology! Another added feature in the DHL software is that once you ship a package to a customer, that customer is added to your address book. So the next time you want to ship to them, all you have to do is type in their name, and their address will automatically come up from your database. Yet another time saver, and reduces the margin of error once again.
Since I am on the Customer Service end of the department, I hear the complaints from the customers, including if their package made it to them in time or not. Overall DHL has been given a great review from our customers. Some packages are delayed, but they are to uncontrollable reasons such as "Dense Fog", or "Bad Weather". You are able to find this out from the detailed information supplied when you track a specific package, which I will expand on.
A convenient feature which I found to be a calming for my customers, is the online package tracker DHL has. When one of my customers calls and questions the whereabouts of their package, all I have to do is type their Airbill number in our system and up comes a complete history on where the package has been since it left my hands, right up to the person who signed it. I remember one irate customer who just about called me every name in the book because his package did not get to him in time. After asking him to hold on while I tracked his package, I found to my relief that the package was delivered to his office. I then proceeded to inform him of the person's name who signed for the package which I read right off of my tracking screen. Long story short, it seems that his clerk at the front desk who signed for it lost the package which redeemed our company of all liability, and saved me a lot of trouble. I can honestly say that from that point on I was thankful that my company made the smart move to use DHL as our carrier of choice.
I know that if I ever needed to send a personal package overnight I would use DHL. From dealing with them on a day to day basis and sending a high volume of packages with barely any complaints from our customers, they have definitely gained my confidence and trust.
