Pros: DDR2100 SDRam, good board design with maximum flexibility
Cons: Can't use all 4 slots for memory
The Bottom Line: Good Athlon board. Don't expect to max out the memory configuration, but great for custom desktops

| MooRogue's Full Review: Abit KG7 Motherboard |
Yay! Abit has released an Athlon board that uses DDR SDRam! My previous review covered the KT7-RAID board as I needed the faster disk speed a RAID 0 provided. This time, I am looking for fast memory performance, and lots of it!
The goal was to build a fast PC with as much memory as possible for the lowest cost. The KG7 was chosen because it did not cost as much as the Intel server class boards, and the fact that it had 4 slots for memory DIMMS. The KG7 can theoratically take a maximum of 4GB of memory.
At the time or purchase, only 512MB PC2100 memory modules were avaliable. The idea was to place 4 of these modules to reach 2GB of total memory. However, we encountered memory corruption issues when all 4 DIMMs were used. Reducing the number of DIMMs installed to 3 solves the problem, and the system passed extensive memtest testing.
We used unregistered memory as ECC memory was not avaliable for sizes greater then 256MB. the Unofficial KG7 FAQ (http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kg7kr7/kg7kr7faq.htm) says that the AMD Chipset should be able to take a full 4 registered DIMMs without problems. I hope to be able to verify this when the registered DIMMs increase in size.
Otherwise, highlights of the board include:
- 6 PCI slots, no legacy ISA slots
- NO integrated peripherals, perfect for custom systems
- Uses DDR SDRam
- ATA100 EIDE interface.
