| wish99's Full Review: Apple iMac Indigo 15 in. (M7669LL/A) Mac Desktop |
I work in a university and in a department that uses Macintosh's for their work. We have G3's in our labs and they are great. I have been getting lots of calls from prospective students and their parents about what kind of computer they should buy.
'I know that the student needs a Mac,' I tell them. 'So that everything is compatible as far so programs. If they have a Mac, they won't lose any of their formatting like they would if they switched between a windows machine and a mac. They can also connect from their dorm room to our server and use our programs from their room.'
The parents also say that they don't want to spend a lot of money. I tell them that I totally understand. I have been through college and know that money can be tight. So what do I recommend? An iMac.
I recommend this for several reasons. One, it's compact. It already has a monitor built in and the only thing extra is the keyboard. Two, it's only $799, compared to the G3 or G4, that's cheap. Three, you will be saving money because you don't have to buy a monitor that could cost from $100-$1000 depending on the size and model.
I tell the parents and students that the only thing extra they would need would be an external zip drive so the student can move their files back and forth to class if need be.
The iMac comes with a fast chip (G3, 350MHZ) and with a big enough hard drive for a student starting out (7 Gigabytes) and has an ethernet connection already installed which is needed in the dorms so they can connect to our various servers. It comes with 2 USB ports and if they find that they need more if they start adding extra items, then they can buy a USB hub which aren't very expensive. It also has a 56K modem in case when they take it home, they can still get on the internet via the phone line. It does come with a CD-ROM and some iMac's come with a DVD-ROM in them, but it's not necessary for the college dorm room.
For the $799 price, you get the Indigo colored iMac which is so pretty, I think. They do have other colors that have the higher price, but that would be a luxury. The computer is also easy to set up. Just plug it in a go! There's not very many wires at all so setup and breakdown are easy and it doesn't take up that much space either!
I think that this is the perfect computer for the dorm. I would buy it myself if I needed one and I recommend it to all the incoming freshmen and to those that are buying a Macintosh for the first time.
