The 400 Mhz iMac DV is the fifth Mac I've owned and about the tenth I've used for an extended period--and it's a joy.
I'm a software developer, and with the exception of hard-core compiling, the iMac DV does everything I could possibly want it to.
MacOS 9.0 is preinstalled, and the new and improved setup wizard really can have US users connected to the internet within 10 minutes of opening the box (don't know whether this is true if you don't have access to Apple's preferred US ISPs). [9.0 has other great features too, such as automatic software update--but that's true of whatever Mac you install 9.0 on.]
The absence of a fan is terrific. It means you can have the iMac sitting in the corner of any room without the noise bothering you. Similarly, the Sleep function means that you can pause and resume your activities without ever having to reboot. Just like my old PowerBooks!
The hockey-puck mouse has come in for a lot of criticism. Personally, I haven't had any problem with it, but then again I don't use it all day every day. Remember there's nothing to stop you from going out and buying an off-the-shelf USB mouse.
My purchase choice was between which of the current crop of Slot-Loading iMacs to go for. Although I didn't really need DVD, I suspect FireWire is A Good Thing (tm). The current base iMac model (running at 350Mhz) lacks the two FireWire ports that guarantees the DV model should have a long and useful life. That being said, not everyone is likely to need FireWire, so it's quite possible the 350 Mhz variant may be enough for most people.
The iMac Special Edition may be more loaded than many users need, but to be honest, I'd have liked the extra RAM.
Overall, the iMac wins the award for best Mac I've ever bought.
