I picked this HP 6640C up at egghead's auction as a refurbished model. It went for about $439.00.
I was in need of a new computer because my youngest daughter wanted to take my IBM back with her to college. I was interested in this model and other similar HP models because of the CD writer. I bought this around the end of June. You would not believe the action on egghead for this and similar models. Often, people would bid more than you could by the machine for from HP. I was lucky to get it at a reasonable price. I was a little disappointed with the software package. Microsoft Works is inadequate. It would have been nice if they had put Works Suite on the machine so that you would get Word. I ended up buying a copy of Word so that I could have decent word processing.
The CD writer is great. My daughter has downloaded around 6GB of music. She figured out how to burn CD's rather quickly. I like the CD writer for backing up files. My Word directory has every document since I first owned a PS 1. It takes up much more room than can be placed on a floppy. With the CD writer, I can back up not only the documents, but the program as well. This is well worth the price. I only had one problem with the machine. When I set it up, it would not recognize the modem. However, I got HP technical support on the phone right away, and the rep did an excellent job of walking this all thumbs person through taking the modem out and putting it back to make sure that it is seated properly. When I had the machine open, I saw where the memory is placed. It is not in a good spot for ham handed people. If I decide to add more memory, I will take the machine down to my local computer shop and let them do it. The computer has caused me no problems, and is much faster than my Aptiva. I know it must be a good deal. My other daughter wanted a computer, and I went back to the auction sites to try to find another one. There are few of these and other similar HP models around. The ones available are going for much higher prices than in the summer. I ended up buying my other daughter a Compaq, which I don't think is as good as this HP. Update 8-12-05. This machine is still in use. My wife uses it in her grade school classroom. No problems at all.
