| vcustudent's Full Review: Sony VAIO PCV-J100 PC Desktop |
Now, when I went shopping for a new computer for college, I had to be price savy. It didn't need to be an incredible set up, but I wanted one that was good for the price and decently powered. I tried and tried until I went to Circuit City, my last stop in my quest to find a good computer. What I came across there was the Sony VAIO PCV-J100.
The price was about right. It cost $1050 with $110 in rebates, so the overal cost was very nice. The speed of the computer itself is a celeron 600. Not burning the charts, but nice none the less. It comes with 64 Megs of SDRAM as well. I seriously recommend adding more though. This computer has a ton of video editing software, but you really need more Ram to use it. I added 64 and with a 128 total, I'm doing fine. The waiting in between programs is almost gone with the new memory. The hard drive is petitioned so you get 2 of them. The main drive is about 8 Gigs and the 2nd is 6 Gigs. Very helpful if you want to keep a clean drive for editing.
A nice feature added as well is the CD-RW included. It is an 8-4-32, which is a very decent speed for the price fo the computer. Most high end Compaq computers have only a 4-4-24 in them. With the CD-RW, you lose getting a printer in the package which is standard for most computer deals, but you can find a good one later.
The Monitor it comes with is very, very nice. It is a 15 inch flat screen Trinitron, so you get unbelievable picture quality. It can get resolutions you might have thought impossible on a 15 inch (around 1600X1200). For those wating a bigger monitor, you have to see this one first. The detail is so sharp that you might not care.
Other features include a network card (great for a dorm network like mine), a quality keyboard and mouse (sturdy feel). You also get a good assortment of video softwere to go along with the firewire port included. There is no microsoft office, but it does come with StarOffice, a gereric clone that works okay. Adobe Photoshop is included to aid your video and photo editing. For any matter, this computer in very ready to edit digital video and is great for those interested in doing so. But like I said before, you will most likely want more Ram if you are going to attempt this.
Overall, this is a good computer for the price and the look of it a pleasent change of pace from all the others out there.
