| supertvfanatic's Full Review: Sony VAIO PCV-LX800 PC Desktop |
You know that "prototype" rocket car ride at disneyland? When you first start that car ride, there's a sudden boost of speed. That's what this computer feels like. This 800EB seems to be a lot faster than my 733. The operating system is much an improvement from windows 98. It's a piece of cake to use, and the restore function helps when you accidently delete a program or something. The LCD screen is 15 inches viewable, which would be the equivalent of a 16 or 17 inch CRT. The 1280x960 resolution is good for everything except for wallpaper, hehe. A SIS630 graphics chip is built into the motherboard for 16 megs of video memory and OpenGL, 3Dfx etc. graphics acceleration. You may want to buy this computer at Sony Direct (www.sonystyle.com) because it gives you the option of an external floppy drive (this comp doesn't come with a floppy drive but i really don't see why you need it anyway because it has a CD-RW).
A convenient light on the LCD panel tells you when you have new email. An ethernet card and 5 USB ports are included. THATS RIGHT, 5. Only one power cord is needed, because the LCD uses very little electricity from the computer. In fact, the average LCD panel uses one third of the energy of an equivalent CRT. LCD screens are a lot more convenient... No more 16 inches needed behind the screen, no degaussing, no geometry or size adjustment, no color temperature adjustment, and no more whining sound as it warms up. Also, the LCD doesn't have the same glare that CRT's have. I had another CRT with an antiglare film, but you could still see the glare and purple spots showed up whevever anything touched it.
The Harmon Kardon speakers are more crisp and clear and basically better than any speakers i've tried so far. It even has less of that hiss than my infinity speakers in the living room. Bass is incredible for such a small speaker. There is an 8x4x32 CD-RW drive, which is pretty fast: a cd can be burned in about 7 minutes. It's a little hassle to copy cd's because there aren't two drives, but the cd rom and 40 GB HD are so good that it doesn't really take much time from your day. There is one pcmcia slot, one memory stick, ilink(also called firewire and IEEE1394, can be used to connect to other computers, camcorders, PS2s...), and usb on the front. There are two pci slots, unfortunately no AGP, but the graphics on this computer is really good, perfect for any game (SIS 630 on board chip). There is barely enough memory to go around, but still enough most of the time to prevent that music from skipping. I decided to upgrade my memory by 128 megs for only $40 at Fry's. The software supplied is abundant, and you can do almost anything you wanted with this machine. It's very slim, but for extra safety measures, a little stand on the bottom of the computer prevents it from falling down. Gamers will really like this computer. And the music doesn't skip!!! My old digital studio (i have a review on it, PCV-R556DS) was always lagging, but this computer consistently gives out that power i want. BUY IT NOW.
I called tech support seven times for help, and each time it got worse. I had to restore my computer. For some reason, it didn't restore properly, so sony is offering to fix my computer. A little hassle and inconvenience, but that's still not enough to set off my rating. After all, they're fixing it. I think my computer was somehow not built right. What are the chances it will happen again? Maybe one in 10,000. I wouldn't worry about it.
