This is my first notebook computer. I was looking for something very portable, yet that I could also hook into a network or use a modem. It is very light, 4.1 pounds with battery. The price is great at less than $2000, which includes 450mhz Pentium III, 12.1" active matrix, external floppy / CD drive combo (many other ultralight-weights charge extra for the CD drive), built in ethernet and modem, 6gig HD. Also does not have a port-replicator (everything is built in) - I probably underappreciate this feature as I have never had a laptop with a port replicator before. I have used this for about 2 months now and find it excellent. It is very portable and seems sturdy.
The only major negative I have is that mine arrived with 2 bad pixels. I guess this is fairly common with laptops and it is industry standard to not replace unless there are a certain number of bad pixels. Acer's policy was something like 10 bad pixels within a 1 square inch area - a pretty crappy policy. I'm glad mine didn't have more bad pixels as the 2 bad ones don't interfere with it's use in any way. Only other negative is that it has only 2.5 meg of video memory, but it seems to work find for what I use it for (word processing and web surfing primarily).
Some other reviews have knocked the battery life, but I think it is pretty good compared to what I have seen other ultraportables rated as. Also, it's very cheap considering an included lithium-ion battery.
Update 4/7/00
Still no problems. Working great. I now also use in on my cable modem network at home and it works well. Been using it many hours a day without any problems. I'm considering adding an additional 64 megs or RAM because at times it seems to run slower than I'd expect and I anticipate it is a memory issue. As for memory, I'd recommend Crucial technologies as their prices were less than half of what Acer sells it for.
