| russrimm's Full Review: Compaq Armada 3500 (310200-006) PC Notebook |
I received my Armada 3500 last week. So far, I'm very impressed. Weighing in at only 4.4lbs, the Armada is the lightest laptop I have owned. It not only reduced the weight of my laptop bag by about 10lbs (my previous notebook was a Fujitsu Lifebook 400), but it added crisp color, with a somewhat decent size (12.1") 800x600 TFT screen. It did, however, come with one bad pixel that is constantly lit up, but it's way at the very top of the screen out of the way and not very noticeable. The Lithium Ion battery seems to last for about 2 hours of normal use. A 3 hour Lithium Ion battery can be purchased separately. The processor installed is an Intel PII, 266mhz, and a 4.1GB hard drive provides a decent amount of space. The display enclosure is made out of a magnesium alloy, which is supposed to provide protection against travel. The video is a 64-bit PCI local bus with 2MB of VRAM (24-bit true color/16.8M colors). It arrived with 32megs of RAM but can be upgraded to 160M. I found a 64MB upgrade chip for just over $100, so the memory is not too pricey. The floppy drive is external, which is the reason for the lightweight of the laptop, and no CD-ROM was included. But for $199 more, you can purchase the MEU Multimedia Expansion Unit which allows you to plug in a LS-120, Zip, Floppy, and comes with a 24X CD-ROM and subwoofer. I'm very happy with my Armada 3500. I can't find a better deal anywhere!
