We have purchased a Compaq Presario 1200XL110. We had a limited budget to purchase a laptop with, however were looking for something that would last a few years. As with other Compaq experiences, they offer a reliable computer for a good price. They certainly may "skimp" on some things, but they are good at building a general purpose PC (laptop in this case) that the general public can be very happy with.
This is our experience with our new laptop. It has buttons for the internet, search, shopping and email at the bottom of the keyboard area. These are nice features for the novice user to get going. I have been playing with them, and once set up, they sort of work. Since we already have an ISP, we did not want to use Compaq's. Additionally, we did not want to use Microsoft Internet Explorer as the default browser. Once changing these couple of things, we get script errors using these buttons - however, the functions still complete properly. NOTE: there were no problems launching things with the default from Compaq. I do not see this as a big problem, since I've always been used to doing this the old fashioned way buy selecting icons on the desktop or in the start menu and plan on continuing to do it that way.
This model comes with a 12.1 inch TFT SVGA display. The display seems sharp and easy to read. I have tried videos on it also, between the screen, the graphics driver and the memory, it looks smooth and does not stop repeatedly while running the video. (This model comes with 64 MB SDRAM with 4MB devoted to graphics). If need be, the owner can up the video shared memory to 8MB.
Also included are JBL Pro Audio System speakers. The sound is integrated into the laptop. For being part of the laptop, I am impressed by the sound, although it does sound slightly "tin-ny".
So, in summary, this laptop is on the high end of the "bottom of the line" in Compaq laptops. I would recommend it to anyone that plans on using it mostly for Word Processing, Email, internet, and other less intensive applications. I would not recommend it if you are planning on running a lot of games and other high powered applications. This is a great laptop for someone who is just starting to get into computers, as well as someone who does not feel as though they need "top of the line", "latest and greatest" technology.
