I purchased this product new a few years ago because i was looking for an inexpensive laptop that had good performance, cd-rom, and an active matrix display.
The Thinkpad 380ED has a 150Mhz Pentium MMX processor, 16MB of standard Ram which I have upgraded to 48MB, 3 Gigabyte Hard drive, 12.1" TFT active matrix SVGA display, 16 bit audio with speaker, cd-rom, and floppy all included in a reasonably compact - but not slim design.
In the few years I have owned this product I have come to love it and rely on it! Its performance is not blazing like the current pentium III machines out there but it runs Windows 98, Internet Explorer 5, & Microsoft Office flawlessly. It rarely crashes or hangs up.
The active matrix screen is beautiful, however 2 pixels (out of 480,000) are defective and display the wrong color - this was out of the box. I tried to get a new screen from IBM but they said that 2 pixels do not qualify me to get a new screen, it is within the acceptable tolerances of their manufacturing process - if you can believe that. I was not pleased with this at first, but i barely notice the problem.
I am now looking to sell this product on ebay because it does not have USB ports or Firewire ports and does not support Cardbus (32 bit PCMCIA) so I can not plug in a USB or Firewire PC card to upgrade.
The Lithium Ion battery only lasted for 2 hours under normal use and it died completely after 2 years. It does not hold a charge at all now.
I would recommend buying this PC used from ebay or any of IBM's thinkpad 380 Series as an inexpensive PC for performing web browsing and word processing.
