The IBM 240 is great for mobile professionals who don't *necessarily* use this as their only computer.
Here are the pluses and minuses:
PLUSES:
+ it's very light
+ great keyboard (if you haven't used the IBM laptop keyboard with the little red "nub" it might take a few weeks to get used to; but after that I found it wonderful
+ adequate RAM, but I found an extra 64 (for about $200) was well worth it
+ great disk storage (about 4.2 gig when I bought mine)
+ processors are good
+ monitor is great for a single user and not bad for small powerpoint presentations
+ *excellent* customer service: I even called on Christmas eve with a question and a very nice and knowledgeable person helped me out
MINUSES:
Only two that I can think of after using it for about 45 days:
- battery life: less than 2 hours. That can be a problem for long trips unless you can plug into a power source or bring along a backup battery.
- this may not be a negative but neither the hard disk drive nor the floppy is internal so you need to carry them with you when you travel. In fact the CD-ROM was extra $ so I had the computer and no way to load software until I purchased the hardware.
I've used three laptops in the past 5 years. This certainly ranks among the top in terms of ease of use. And in terms of the price, it's a steal. I paid $1499 for a 300 MHz with 64 megs of RAM. Shop around before you buy.
A final note: I'm pretty picky about my computers. I won't ever buy another Compaq (had two desktops that were sub-par and have two colleagues who had laptops that were clunkers). I love Dell desktops but haven't been as impressed with their laptops. When you combine the size, weight and power of this IBM I can't think of anything better in its class.
