The IBM Thinkpad brand of notebook computers have a reputation for high quality and rock solid construction. The Thinkpad 570 is no exception to this rule. It is the thin counterpart to the 700 series notebooks and lets you shed some weight without giving up too much in return.
The 570 sports the familiar Thinkpad keyboard, the best in the industry. Many notebooks have keyboards that appear to be designed for people with tiny fingers. Not the Thinkpad. It has both an excellent keyboard and the superior Trackpoint mouse substitute.
The 570's large active matrix display is also one of the best that you can find in notebook computers. It is bright and goes right to the edge of the screen.
As for expandability, you'll find the standard serial port, parallel port, and dual PCMCIA slots. Inside is a floppy disk drive that you'll quickly remove and replace with the CDROM or optional DVDROM drive. The Thinkpad comes with an external connector and case for the floppy disk drive. You can carry this around or leave it connected on your desk when you're in the office.
Like most notebooks, the 570 processor speed lags what is available on the desktop equivalents by 8 - 12 months. Ditto with the hard disk capacity. If you value mobility, this still makes a decent trade-off.
All in all, the Thinkpad is a great investment for people on the run.
