| kam61799's Full Review: Lenovo ThinkPad A20 2629 (262962U) PC Notebook |
I am a long time Toshiba laptop user and recently had cause to pick up the new Thinkpad A20p. For this configuration I let go of around $4,000, but so far it seems that it was definately money well spent.
The specs on this machine say it all: "Top of the line." Huge harddrive, ampel RAM (even for you graphics fans), integrated ethernet and modem, more video mem than most people will ever need, a great screen, dvd, and an S-video outlet to boot (too bad my tv does not have an S video input!).
Win 2000, which came preinstalled on the machine, squeezes all the power out of the Pentium III chip, resulting in a computing experience that truly blows your hair back. Another thing I liked about the machine is the pointer stick pointing device (in my experience much better than the touchscreens found on Sony, Dell, and Compaq machines; plus since Toshiba uses the pointing stick on all of its machine I am definately used to it).
The weight of this machine is one thing that might scare a few potential customers off. At around 8 pounds it is no light load, but with the amount of features found in this all-in-one desktop replacement the extra weight is well worth it.
My other machine is a Toshiba Tecra 8100 (my personal choice, the IBM is a necessity for work related stuff)and I would advise any one in the market for a top of the line notebook to give both the these superb machines a close look. The Tecra is a good deal lighter, but you don't get a dvd drive and disk drive at the same time, but the IBM makes up for its weight with a good solid feel, tactile keyboard, and an overall quality heft.
In closing I must remark that I could not find one bad thing to mention about the IBM Thinkpad A20p, well except the price and the wait it took to finally get to my office (I hear that back order can be as bad as 7 weeks.) These to minor issues aside, I must say that Big Blue has come through and made a quality notebook that sets the standard in the desktop replacement category.
