| unclejay's Full Review: Sony VAIO SR7K PC Notebook |
What a relief to get rid of the 15 pound anvil around my neck ! Out went the Dell Ironman Triathalon Shot-Put and in came the SR7K ! It's only 10 by 8 inches, fits in one of those cool Eagle Creek All Aboard travel pouches, and has a great screen - very legible unless you have weak eyes. Caveats though - the whole case top half warped slightly ( about 1/4 inch upwards) due to heat ( in a hot car but not in the trunk ) - also, it isn't terribly fast, like other Sony notebooks - compared to other 600 mhz Pentiums it performs more like a 450 or 500. This did not improve when I removed start-up services. The DV editing software is a huge bonus, although mitigated somewhat with the new Windows ME DV software coming on the market.
One reviewer here compared and opted for the Z505 which indeed has better features BUT - the difference in battery life is huge - the SR7K gets 3 to 4 hours, the Z505 only 1 to 2. That means I can leave the power brick home for most day-trips, a big weight and hassle saving.
Things I miss badly - no Infrared or serial port ( can't hot-sync my Palm any more, had to move it to another computer - also can't use my DeLorme GPS unit ) I may have to get a Sony Clie to use the USB port for that. Also, the mouse plugs in the LEFT side - wadda dey NUTZ ???
Word on the street is, forget about third party DVD and CD/RW drives, even USB devices, use the Sony peripherals. Dont know for sure yet.
Way cool device, though. Dont need a Targus case, just stash it in your
portfolio like a pad of paper - this is a MAJOR ADVANCE !!
