| roadwarrior's Full Review: Toshiba Portege 3480CT (PP348C-4PU82) PC Notebook |
After spending a month of exhaustive research and trials of all of the "UltraThin" class of PC portables out there, I came to the conclusion that I had to try a Toshiba 3480CT, the newest entry from Toshiba. This svelt laptop is a mear .8" think and weighs just under 3.5lbs. When looking at it closed it is hard to imagine the power that lies within.
After releasing the screen latch the 11.3 PolySilicon screen comes into view. The screen is backed with a lightweight silver magnesium cover for both protection as well as heat dissipation characteristics. The keyboard is a full 85 key affair, and although I have no problem wizzing along at a high rate of speed, this is not a keyboard for a person with thick fingers. The buttons include the usual left-right (in Toshiba's case upper and lower) mouse buttons as well as the addition of up-down scroll buttons which are arranged just above the others in a left-right arrangement.
The buttons and all other keys and switches are "virtually silent" as opposed to a previous review I read on the unit that came before this in the Toshiba line. The upper shell of the body is a charcoal colored magnesium metal and the lower portion a hard impact plastic. All inputs and doors are secure and not of the flimsy type. What struck me immediately was how utterly quiet the harddrive is in it's operation. The fan initially wirring quietly in the background but occasionally going off completely.
After 7 hours of downloading and setting up my software the machine got only very mildly warm above the harddrive location on the right palm rest area. This is barely warm and certainly not a annoying HOT type of temperature. The rest of the machine stayed actually cool to the touch. Toshiba has implemented a fluid filled heat pipe exchanger/fan arrangement in this new unit and I can say with all confidence it certainly works well.
