| kidquick's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Jornada 545 Pocket PC |
Ok, lets talk about the nice color screen. its everything you need when you're looking at a unit 5 hours a day. The pale green or barely backlit gray can be a bit annoying.
I like the full functionality of the unit. YES, you can view full spreadsheets from excel and actually work on them as though you were on your desktop. The same thing with word. They are scaled down versions, but you can work in them, type letters and have the documents automatically updated on your desktop.
I would immediately go out and buy another memory card though, probably a 64mb that you can find on the net for @ $70. It will allow you to store just about all the files you want.
I listened to MP3's and my favorite music on it when i was not working on it. Not to mention i was able to take some pictures of my kids along with me and run SLIDE SHOW on the unit now less to show my friends. Yes, a slideshow. Remember, this is not a PALM, it is a fully functional computer in your hand. It syncs up with your computer EFFORTLESSLY; and i do mean EFFORTLESSLY. when you install the software, you get a folder that has all of your 'road files' in it that you would like to take with you. drag and drop capability there. if you are working on a document on your desktop computer, that is located in your 'road file' folder, and you have the Jornada sitting in the sync'd docking station, when you press 'save' on your desktop computer, your Jornada updates the file as you go! CHECK THAT OUT!
Also, the transcription program on the jornada is different than that of a palm. it allows you to write a letter in cursive how YOU would write it, and then pick a letter from the transcription alphabet that represents that letter you just wrote in cursive. Then when you write that letter, the machine recognizes it. So, you can write notes on the go and the machine will recognize the letters and put them in a letter format as you write cursive of jibberish or however you want to write! Did I mention you can write anywhere on the screen? Yes you can. If you want a pc you can hold in your hand that gives you a color screen, a battery that last 8 hours and automatically syncs with your desktop computer as you work, this is it. But like I said, by the additional memory card because its basically your hard drive for the unit.
Anyways, like I said, it’s a fully functional computer in your hand and you cant beat that. Its not a PALM you just use for tracking your busy schedule. You can do just about everything you can do on your desktop on you Jornada.
Did i mention the cool metallic lid that protects the unit in the hot sun. It actually gets cooler as the sun gets hotter! Now how’d they do that? Is that some kinda space suit technology or what?
