| jpowell73's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Jornada 548 Pocket PC |
I purchased an HP Jornada 548 a few months ago. This purchase stemmed from my need to have a PDA. I first purchased the Palm IIIxe but wanted to jazz up my daily work a bit with color so I went back to the store to purchase a Palm IIIce. I had been playing around with the idea of a Compaq or HP mainly because they use Windows Ce and have Word and Excel installed, which I use regularly everyday. I decided to spend the extra money and purchase the HP Jornada 548.
I really have enjoyed my purchase. Although it does have a few drawback. For starters, you better bring the charger with you. On average I get about 6 hours to a charge with the screen not set to power saver mode (which drastically cuts down on screen brightness). HP claims you can use it to play MP3s, however with only 32mb (unless you purchase a compact flash card) and the tiny speaker built in this really is not an option. Another drawback is my local store no longer carries them so they do not support accessories, such as screen protectors. This forces you to purchase everything online.
Overall the Jornada provides many features the Palm did not. Windows CE is a plus allowing you to work with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel rather easily. The built-in light is also a plus (so you do not have to have the sound on in a meeting to see that you have a reminder). Another thing I like about the Jornada is you can take dictation on it via a voice recorder. You also do not need software to recognize your handwriting like the Palm (it's built in already) you also do not need to learn a new language to write on the Jornada, it easily converts your own handwriting to text.
The software provided with the Jornada is great. You get a variety of programs free such as Image Expert Ce a nice program to display and edit pictures. I don't care what HP says about having on 12 bit color, the images are incredible on Image Expert Ce. You also get Zio Golf a great game with terrific graphics, something the Palm till never support.
My conclusion, I love it. I am extremely glad I purchased it. While rather expensive $50 more than competitors I am extremely happy. Before you buy you may want to consider how often you are going to use this product and do you need additional things like viewing pictures, Excel, or Word. If you travel it is nice to be able to take a picture of the family along with you where ever you go! But are these things worth it. Don't get caught up spending more money on a flashier product if you don't really need it. For daily schedule and note taking ability you may want to consider a Palm or Handspring. But if you want the BMW of the Palm world consider the HP Jornada.
