The Handspring Visor has changed the way in which I manage my life. I used to carry around a bulky Franklin Planner, which worked well except that I did not enjoy manually updating entries in Microsoft Outlook and my planner. I would spend a few hours each week moving contacts and appointments back and forth from my computer to my Franklin, which was a pain in the butt. But now with my Visor I just push a button and my Visor and Outlook 2000 sync up my calendar, contacts, and to do list in seconds. The included USB cable is very fast and quite easy to install and use.
The included applications (Address, Datebook, To Do List Memo Pad are the main players) are handy and launch very quickly. And because the Visor runs the Palm OS there are literally hundreds if not thousands of third party programs available. A few of these that I consider invaluable are Handy Shop, Big Clock, Silver Screen and Diddle Bug which are available for download at www.palmgear.com.
The handwriting recognition works well and the unit feels sturdy and should last a long time. The Springboard support of additional hardware add-ons is very cool as well. I’ve purchased the Backup Module that I highly recommend.
If you are looking for a device from which to access information such as grocery lists, contact information, and tasks you will not regret purchasing a Handspring Visor. These are the main reasons I purchased the Visor rather than a more expensive yet feature rich (MP3 playback support, image editing) Casio Cassiopeia E-100 or iPac PocketPC.
Although the screen is clear a backlight would be a nice addition to the Visor. I also wish that AC adapter could power the USB cradle. As it now stands, each time you want to sync the Visor with your computer it uses precious battery power.
These small annoyances aside I can’t imagine going back to my Franklin Planner. Having to erase address entries when friends address or phone number changes seems outdated and messy now. The Visor handles such tasks with aplomb and invites the user to edit any information it stores. I highly recommend the Handspring Visor.
