cldstar's Full Review: Handspring Visor Pro Handheld
My first Visor was a Platinum and I loved it. The fast Dragonball processor and 8 meg of RAM were well suited to my needs as a student. It kept all my data at my fingertips and was fun to use. I had the flexibility to use it with Outlook and coordinate my email, schedule, task list, address book etc easily. This is true of almost any Palm OS device, but I chose Handspring to encourage competition in the marketplace (always a good thing for everyone).
So, why did I go for the Visor Pro if the Platinum was serving me so well? Simply put, I needed more memory. I put lots of books on my Visor, including a dictionary that I use nearly everyday. Believe it or not, I actually used up 8 meg on the Platinum pretty quickly.
16 meg of RAM is now more than enough for all the things I use regularly and I don’t have to shuffle things on and off the handheld to make room for whatever new thing I want to try out.
The Pro is exactly the same size and weight (as far as I can tell) as the Platinum. In fact, no one really knows I upgraded. They are even the same color. The Pro has rechargeable batteries so I am no longer going through the AAAs like I used to (although the Platinum was not too bad on batteries, really). When the battery gets low, I leave the Pro in the cradle overnight and I am good to go.
After seeing (and playing with) the Visor Edge line, I am a little jealous of their size and weight. They are definitely a slimmer, more compact design and fits more easily into shirt pockets and so forth. In its leather case, my Pro measured over an inch thick and that is a little too much to slip in your hip pocket.
Visor prices have come down dramatically in recent months. I paid only $249.00 for my Visor Pro and Handspring’s website now offers the Pro for $229.00 with a free travel charger (and free shipping). Not a bad deal for a device that shames nearly every other Palm OS device in memory and processor speed.
There are the standard complaints you may read elsewhere about the Springboard expansion cards being expensive and the OS not being flash upgradeable, but these are moot points for me right now. I am happy with my Visor’s capabilities as is.
