When I bought my palm Vx, I was attracted to the hard case- super protective, nice metallic finish. However, I now find it to be way too large and unusable.
INTRO
For those who have the Palm V or Vx, you know it comes with a cheap leather cover that slides in the stylus port on the left. Their cover provides very little protection and has a huge problem. The cover is so thin that is very easy to unknowingly turn on the Palm while it is in your pocket. To prevent this, I bought the hard case, for $40.
PROS
1.The hard case has a nice shiny metallic finish It looks beautiful and professional! For those who like to show off, you will with this case. It has a dignified look to it and gives your Palm and aire of importance.
2.Super-protective In this case, it becomes very difficult to damage your Palm. It can survive many falls without damage to the structure of your Vx. Now, I wouldn't recommend throwing it against a wall, but it is sturdier than any other PDA case I've seen.
3.Doesn't turn on while resting in your pocket -Again, this was one of the biggest complaints against the Palm V's cover. You will not have this problem with the hard case. The metal is sturdy and thus, it becomes nearly impossible to press the power button with the case closed.
4.Keeps unit in securely- will never fall out!!
CONS
1.Large i didn't realize it when I bought the case but it does noticably add to the size of your V or Vx. one of the reasons I bought the Vx was that it was noticably smaller than all other models. However, with the hard case, the Vx becomes nearly the same size as the IIIx or Visor!!! Using the hard case you forget how small your V is. It makes a big difference when it sits in your pocket...believe me! The hard case changes the width of the Palm dramatically.
2.ExpensiveThis I put here because the case is $40. Then again, if I was willing to pay more for my Palm, I do think it is worth it to pay for a protective case, if that is what you desire.
3.Doesn't sit in cradle while in case One major pain is having to take the Palm out of the case every time I want to hotsync or recharge. Again, not a big deal, but it something that I wish I didn't have to do.
4.Hard to put on For those who don't have a V, it is hard to imagine... The Palm V has a groove for the stylus on both the right and left side. The case has a stylus shaped rod that slide into the groove on the Palm to keep it in the case. At times it can be hard to take in and out of the case.
5.Takes the left side stylus port away from lefties! then again, I am a righty so why do I care :)
6.Allegedly can become dented This hasn't been a problem for me, but I have heard it so I will pass it on...
WHO IS FOR
I think this case is best for people with an active lifestyle who drop their Palm or fear they may drop their Palm. (ex- if you keep it in your shirt pocket and bend over a lot)
VERDICT
If I could do it over again, I would not have bought this. The size thing is a huge point. If I like my Vx because it is so small, why would I want to house it in a case that is the size of a IIIx or Visor? If protecting your Palm is your primary concern, this is the case to get. However, I do not recommend buying this case for aesthetic reasons alone even though it does look great. My advice is stick with a thinner case to truly enjoy the Vx for the micro-machine that it is!
