My husband purchased this product really because Best Buy was having a great deal with MSN and we needed a Zip drive or something with the capacity for big storage and the deal basically got us the CDR for free.
Ours is 12x4x32 and I find it very useful.
The installation was pretty easy if you are used to opening up your computer. (Ours is internal). The directions were fairly well laid out, but not all configurations of hardware were considered. For instance, the CDR is a slave of the CD/DVD and because of that we cannot play the CDs from the CDR but instead have to move the CD to the CD Rom drive. A minor pain, and maybe can be avoided but the directions didn't tell us how.
If you are not used to opening up your computer, you will not like the installation. I don't know if there is an external option or not.
I can't really comment on price because we basically got it for free because of the Best Buy/MSN deal.
I have used it to save all of the web page data I used to have on my hard drive and it did it very quickly and effortlessly. I saved 4 web pages worth of data on one CD.
Also, I found the graphic interface user friendly. It was easy to figure out how to create CDs. We did have a bit of a problem at the beginning by recording separate tracks instead of "session at once" but once figured out, it works wonderfully. It is also makes it easy to navigate to find the folder you want to copy.
Occasionally, it hangs up and we can't have too many windows open at once. We have a Pentium II processor with 256 MB of RAM and don't usually have problems with programs hanging up.
The "helper" (animated i) is obnoxious, though. It would be endurable if the help he gave was helpful, but usually I can't find the information I want and get better results by playing around.
We are using it more that I thought we would. I am backing everything up because it is so easy and quick. Plus, the CDs hold so much more information, you don't have to keep feeding the computer disks!
Overall, it was worth it for us because of the great deal on the price, we are comfortable opening up the computer to install hardware and we needed something that would store a lot of data (so we could save the web pages - small business for us). But, if you don't need massive storage or aren't interested in illegal copying of songs off the internet, and you don't want to open your computer to install it, this isn't for you.
