| wave54's Full Review: SYQT SyQuest SparQ (SPARQ1AI-01) Drive |
I wish I had read others opinions before my own experience with SyQuest. I also can easily understand why they are bankrupt!
The SyJet 1.5 GB internal drive I bought from an auction site is the most cantankerous, finicky piece of hardware I have ever installed. The cartridge has to be ejected and re-inserted numerous times in the hope that it might actually engage and stay in the drive.
If it decides to bless me with a few moments of operation, the drive indeed works well. The problem is that 95% of the time, it won't accept the cartridge or it beeps and spits it out. It will actually do this in the middle of an operation, such as a full drive back-up.
Too bad -- a great idea so poorly executed.
Hard to believe they actually sold these for $299 with an additional $149 for a single cartridge!
I would not recommend this product to anyone seeking a removable storage solution. There are a number of CD-RW drives available from the auction sites for around $100 that will do the trick. And besides, almost everyone else has a CD-ROM drive -- you won't be stuck with a proprietary format.
