| redking's Full Review: Teac 8x24 CD-R 58S Burner |
Overview: The Teac 58S is a 8x24 SCSI CDR drive aka "burner". It burns at 8x speed and reads at 24x speed. Since it is a SCSI drive, it requires a SCSI card. The Teac 58S is able to burn 650 MB (74 minute) or 700 MB (80 minute) blank cds.
What's Good?: Teac is a solid name in computer hardware. In addition to making this CDR drive, they also produce solid floppy disk drives. In short, Teac is a good choice for computer hardware. I have had my Teac 58S for almost a year and it has given me no problems at all, whether it's burning a CD or reading a CD.
8x24 - This baby burns at 8x. That means you can burn a CD, without simulation, in about eleven minutes! I used to watch TV or eat a meal when burning with my old CDR, but with the Teac's 8x burn, the CDs are done burning in almost no time.
SCSI interface - SCSI is a wider bus than IDE, which means more data can be sent and less CPU utilization is required. Therefore, you don't have to stop what you're doing when you burn a CD. With IDE burners, I would shut down all my programs and then burn a CD. But with the Teac 58S, I can burn a CD while surfing the web, listening to mp3s and working in Microsoft Word 97. This enhances productivity and gives you more flexibility.
No coasters - I have burned a lot of CDs with my Teac 58S and it has NEVER given me a coaster. Believe it. It even burns cheapo blank CDs. My friend had blank CDs that wouldn't work with his Plextor 12x burner, but they worked fine in my Teac 58S. Also, overburning is supported provided your CDR software has this feature. I have overburned a few blank CDs with positive results.
What's Bad: The only negative I can think about is the price. At around $300, it is the same price as the top quality, IDE Plextor burners. However, since the Teac 58S is a SCSI CDR drive, you have to have a SCSI card ready or you will have to spend additional money to purchase one. The SCSI card I use is the Adaptec 2940U2W.
Conclusion: The Teac 58S (8x24) is the best SCSI burner that you can buy. I would recommend it anybody who creates their own CDs. It is absolutely the best CDR drive for people who already have SCSI cards in their system.
