j3nny3lf's Full Review: Logitech SoundMan G1 2 Speakers
For the last several years, my computer sound system has consisted of a pair of $15 Labtec headphones, which are superb for telephony, but lousy and tinny for music. Seeing as how whenever I'm using the computer, I have one of my hundreds of MP3s playing, this became more and more unsatisfactory to me as time passed. Finally, I decided that it was time to purchase a pair of decent speakers. I sat down and thought about what features were most important to me, and armed with my wishlist, I went to OfficeMax and poked around with their speaker display.
The biggest factor in selecting speakers was the sound quality. My new speakers needed to handle highs and lows, bass and treble, a full spectrum of sound without rattling or buzzing or sounding tinny. Price was also important, since I'm basically flat broke right now, and my budget was less than $50. Since I live in a mobile home and have very little space, size of the speakers was also important to me. They had to be small enough to fit on my overcrowded desk, yet big enough that they wouldn't end up buried under the heaps of drek I pile up in the course of a standard day.
OfficeMax had about a dozen different sets of speakers, ranging from a truly junky and tinny pair for about $15, all the way up to a complete surround sound system for nearly $200. There were four sets for under $50, and the only set with every feature I needed were the Logitech Soundman G1. Although I heard speakers with richer sound that day, all of those were far more expensive than the G1.
An interesting side note here is that the G1 speakers sounded better than any other speakers they were selling in the $50-$100 range. It was only in speakers over $100 that I found any improvement in sound over the G1, and those were much too far out of my budget.
I've been using these speakers for about 3 months now, and so far have found them to be phenomenal. I blast my music through them at high volumes with no weird little sounds interfering, and when playing computer games they deliver crisp sound even with explosions. All in all, these are one of my better peripheral purchases.
