I purchased the Altec 4030 because I was looking for a decent to moderately priced computer speaker system which would provide sound for my MP3s.
The 4030 came as a Top Choice pick on CNET. The editor commented that these were the best sound quality speakers ever made.

I highly disagree with this statement. Highly disagree.

As an aside, this is one of the reasons I first started writing epinions -- to inform the consumer of the good and the bad so they can empower themselves and make the correct buying decision.

The 4030's offer pretty good sound quality. The high and low tones are very very crisp, and the system produces a beautiful array of sounds, similarly to some of the Bose systems.
The system is durably built. They are quite heavy and made of hard metal/plastic material (called Pallatic).
The 4030's includes gold screw wall mounts for the satellite speakers.
Color comes in two choices. I got them in white, but you could pay two more dollars for the black color. I've seen the pictures in black and they are very hip.
the Bad
The 4030's LACK a significant amount of BASS. A significant amount of bass. The subwolfer is a weak.
My roommate has a set of Altecs and my friend has a set of Yamaha's that are half the price of these Midilands.
I bought the 4030 for around a hundred at Buy.com a month ago. You can get them cheaper when Buy.com has the free shipping weekends. Buy.com charges an arm and a leg for shipping + handling. I was charged 19.95 for ground shipping.
The power on this system is not as great as I imagined. Even on the low sounds, there is an annoying buzzing sound that I cannot seem to get rid of. The high sounds get distorted, as does the sound quality.
I'd have to say this is medium-high volume performing set of speakers.
The system also boasts a control panel that you can fit into your computer. I find it a nuisance. For one, the panel is too big to fit into my computer. And even if I could, I am lacking space to fit it in since I already have my CD-r in the other slot.
OVERALL
I would recommend this system for people looking for good to great sound quality but not those who are looking for powerful BASS. And at this price, I would look for another system.
