Pros: Good sound, attractive design, handy puck
Cons: No power switch, too many other controls
The Bottom Line: They sound good and look good, but suffer from a few design flaws. Still, I recommend them overall.

| misterhappy's Full Review: Level 9 Sound Designs MM-1000 2 Speakers |
I've had my Monsoon speakers for over a year, and overall they have served me well. They sound good, look great, and are basically well made, but with some caveats.
The most important thing with speakers is the sound, of course, and these are quite good. As some other reviewers have noted, they are highly directional, so you need to put your head right "in the zone" for maximum clarity. I use them for games and for listening to music on my computer, so this is fine.
The cords are nice and long, making for easy setup. There's a useful little "puck," a device that's connected to the subwoofers by a wire, which gives you a mute button and a thumbwheel for volume. This is useful, but there is ultimately a problem of too many volume controls, which can be a pain. Consider: the subwoofer has a volume knob on it (plus a bass boost button and a bass level knob)... then there's the puck, with its own volume knob, then there's my computer's master volume setting (which I can control either onscreen or via my keyboard), then there's the volume control in my audio player program. When the music's too loud or too soft, I have to run around looking for the prime culprit, and it's a bit silly.
My puck has developed a defect, in that there is sometimes still some sound when the mute button is pressed. I assume this is an anomaly.
I do have some complaints about this product. Foremost: there is no power switch! I don't know how much power it uses when it is not in use, but I don't like wasting electricity just because they couldn't slap on a 50-cent power switch. Also, there is an audible hiss from the speakers when not playing music; again, with a power switch I could do away with that annoyance.
Still, I bought them for sound, and they do sound good.
