| hakchang's Full Review: Yamaha YST-MS50 Speaker System |
Nice speakers for $20!?! Yamaha offers a series of multimedia speakers with their "Advanced YST Technology" in 3 different power units. This is probably more of a marketing effort than a technological breakthrough though. Nevertheless, these tiny speakers rock!
Just a quick disclaimer, Epinion has categories for only the 50 and 100W systems, but I feel that the 30W deserves mention as well.
Pros:
1) Design - Both subwoofer and satellite speakers are clean and sleek. The subwoofer has a cool dopple indentation on top of the unit and a fabric meshed grilled wrapped on three sides. The satellite speakers have the main power button and volume control on top of the right speaker. An wedge shaped base allows vertical angle adjustments. The only bad part of design is, see con#2.
2) Compact size - The subwoofer is a tiny 7"x7"x7" cube. The speakers are 2"x2" and 4" long.
3) Price - The unit retails for $39.99. For a limited time only (till 6/30/00) Yamaha is offering a $20 rebate on all multimedia speakers. Buy from Computer4Sure.com through Cybershop.com and get $10 rebate for from Cybershop.com. The total comes out to $39.99+$10 s/h - $30 rebates=$20!!! Not bad at all.
4) Computer4Sure.com - Just a small plug for this website. Buying the speakers were hassle-free, and I got it via UPS in 3 days! They even emailed me 3 times, 1st the receipt, 2nd the process order, and 3rd the mailing process. Very good service indeed. Just remember to print out the rebate from their site.
Cons:
1) Power - At a total of 30W (6W per satellite speaker and 18W subwoofer), the unit sounds great if sitting right in front of the speakers. But it's not enough to fill a space bigger than a small bedroom.
2) Design - With all the nice design details, the satellite speakers do not come with a wall mounting bracket. Another design problem is the that the subwoofer volume control is located on the back of the unit. Since the subwoofer is typically tucked away on the floor, changing the bass volume will be inconvenient.
Remember, get it now and get money back!
