When my local telephone company Ameritech offered me DSL internet service for 29.99 per month, and I realized I could use my telephone while surfing the net, I jumped at the chance.
They sent me my installation package wich included an enthernet chip to place in my computer (very easy) and I am totally NOT techno. I was a little leary of opening my computer and trying to install something. However the instructions that came were very clear and accurate and I had the enthernet chip installed into my computer in minutes, NOT HOURS or DAYS......
They sent me the modem to plug in, again very easy instructions and had it all hooked up in no time.
Well about 6 months later, I received a letter from Ameritech saying they were merging with Yahoo, and they should be fully set up with in another 6 months. I had no problems during this merging at all. Everything still worked great. I signed up with their special offer for 29.99 per month for 1 year. I had 30 days to try the service, during which time I could cancel without an outrageous cancellation fee. Needless to say I kept my service. The only problem I had was when I never received my upgrade CD to upgrade my SBC Ameritech DSL service with the new fully merged SBC Yahoo DSL. I called the 800 DSL customer service a few times, and they helped me upgrade from the website. The actually upgrade onto my system was a little nerve wracking, but I'm not a computer whiz either. The DSL Customer Service people were fantastic most of the time. Some of them would even stay on the phone with me until I had all my problems worked out. This took me about an hour one time.
My internet speed has been great, much better then dial up. They also called me a few months ago to offer me another year of service at the special rate of 29.99 per month. I was excited. The 29.99 per month is only a promotional special with SBC Yahoo(Ameritech DSL)at least here in my area. When the special rate is expired, the monthly service will then cost me 39.99 per month. However after checking into the cost of many other services available, I will stay with SBC Yahoo. It is much less then most of the others in the area. I would love to try Road Runner, cable, but they are so expensive.
With the recent upgrade and merge with Ameritech and Yahoo in my area I noticed many pleasant changes. I get the same great regular free Yahoo features, as well as many more. The email accounts are great. I have my main account with 25mb of storage and can add up to 10 sub accounts. It brings you to the main sign in page (after your all set up). It shows everyones little icon chosen, and their names under the icon (email accounts).
My son really likes it too. One of the features of the new SBC Yahoo that I just don't care for is the Yahoo messenger associated with the new user I.D's. I just created a new user in my Yahoo messenger to avoid this problem. The problem is that when I created my new email per instructions from SBC Yahoo DSL the entire email address shows up on my yahoo messenger, and not just my user ID (name). I didn't want anyone and everyone to have access to my email address, so I created another user name to use on Yahoo messenger, that is not affiliated with my email address.
I have had to contact DSL customer service a few times with technical issues that I thought were resulting from my DSL service. However after a few trouble shoots I found out the DSL service was not the problem at all. Also there was once when the service was down due to a heavy storm. When I called customer service, they announced the service being out in certain areas, but the problem was being taken care of immediately. It was only a couple of hours or less and my DSL was operating normally again.
I would definitely recommend using SBCYahoo DSL if available in your area. If you have Ameritech phone service in your area, I would give them a call and ask about it. I am beginning my 2nd year with this service, and have to say, I really have no complaints except the minor problems I listed above.
For the price of a 2nd phone line because you just can't stand being without your telephone while on line, I would say use DSL service instead. Shop around, I think you will find SBCYahoo/Ameritech, one of the best quality services and with the lowest rates.
I pay my DSL service to Ameritech, right on my regular monthly telephone bill. This is also convienent.
