| imbrium's Full Review: Pacific Bell Pacbell ADSL |
I have had Pacific Bell ADSL for 6 months now and am quite happy with it. The connect time is fast (within one second) and the downstream (information coming from the internet to your computer) speeds are pretty amazing. Pacific Bell guarantees a minimum of 384 Kbps, but I've clocked in at over 780 Kbps on several occasions.
Installation was fairly painless. The tech was competent and solved some sort of problem with my order without too much fuss.
I have had a few minor problems. Every problem (except two) could be fixed by rebooting the computer (which seems to be the miracle cure-all for most computer problems). Both exceptions were not really Pacific Bell issues but could have posed frustrating problems for novice computer users none-the-less.
The first problem was with configuring a new mail program on new computer with new ADSL service. I was feeling lazy and contacted Pacific Bell technical support. It did take a while to get through but when I did, the tech support person was nice and informative but wasn't really able to help me because it wasn't a Pacific Bell issue. Soon afterwards, I felt more motivated and solved my own problem using their on-line FAQs. Pac Bell loses one star for its mediocre tech support.
The second issue occurred when my pet rabbit chewed through the phone cord, for which I can hardly hold Pacific Bell responsible. I wonder, though - had I called Tech Support, how long it would have taken for the cause to be discovered?
I am quite happy with the service and really appreciate the fast speeds. You do pay for the speed though, to the tune of $40 per month (but still cheaper than most competitors). For the casual internet user who rarely downloads large files and spends most of the time chatting or e-mailing, the price tag may not be worth it. If you need the speed, though, $40 is well worth it.
