When I first moved to boston, my only choice was RCN for broadband. luckily, it was tested by a friend who lives down the block, who has had it for years in Boston. I found the hookup to be painless, as they connected my phone, TV and cable modem at the same time and took them less than 1 hour. I pay $40 a month for cable modem and $25 for cable TV, which I think is a pretty good price for a 2-way modem at 1.5 MBPS. No hookup or modem fee either. I have been able to get incredible download speeds (up to 200k/sec sustained using napster or download accelerator).
Web browsing has been another story. I have sometimes found surfing to be very slow at times between 6-11pm on weekdays. I wasn't sure if it had to do with overall internet congestion during those hours or maybe because many RCN users were sharing the same node during that time. In any case, i have sometimes found evening web browsing to be slower than with my 56k dialup modem. Fortunately, i called RCN and bitched to them and after several attempts to repair the problem on their end, they sent someone to my apartment (twice) to deal with it. Fortunately, the problem was finally resolved. *****IF YOU ASK THEM, THEY WILL CREDIT YOUR ACCOUNT FOR TIME THAT YOUR CABLE MODEM SPEED WAS SUBOPTIMAL!*** During a 2 week period when browsing was slow and I made multiple service requests, once the problem was resolved I called them up to ask for an account credit and the guy was nice enough to request 4 weeks of credit (ie $40 refund) for me!
so overall, i have been pleased with RCN cable in Boston. No, they aren't perfect, but I have found them to be very willing to work with you if you actually take the initiative to call and press them a bit.
