If your only choice for broadband is RCN cable modem service, you *may* want to consider it. Expect much greater latency than on a dial-up modem, frequent short outages and occasional multi-day failures, and to top it all, a customer service organization that apparently doesn't do weekends, and while polite, is usually clueless about what's wrong.
I've had 2-way cable modem service for a year, and I've never dealt with a more inept or frustrating company than RCN. Whether it's delivering DOA equipment, missing service appointments, failing to manage the basics of good customer relations, RCN takes the cake. Over the last year, my cable modem has been totally unusable for about 3 weeks, and has had serious performance problems -- failures in routing, email, news, etc. -- about 20% of the time.
The problems were so severe that I joined a group of fellow sufferers in my city that met with RCN representatives every few weeks last summer. RCN made many promises about improved service in those meetings, and as far as I can tell, lived up to NONE of them. If your city or town is thinking of licensing RCN for cable TV or cable modems, look into how well RCN has served their current subscribers. If you personally have a choice, and can afford it, think about going to DSL instead.
