Well I finally got cable modem! No more 56k and no more busy signals. The questions is was it worth it?
First the good -
RCN Cable Modem is awesome! It is blazing fast typically I get between 1 mb to 1.5 mb a sec. Usually the sites just load instantly. Watching streaming video and listening to steaming audio is great. I download at around 30 kbps to 100+ kbps depending on where the download is from. Also service is always up, occasionally the internet goes down for a couple of minutes but it hasn't been too much of a problem. If you are big in to Mp3s and Napster than this is a must.
Now the bad -
About 2/3 of RCN's service people know jack and they are very slow. It took us 2 weeks to make an appointment to get the cable modem installed. Since our house has a seperate appartment that we rent out we ordered two seperate cable modems. They couldn't schedule both on one day so they came on two seperate days.
The first service guy that came to install a modem did a terrible job. First he didn't speak english. Second he ran a white wire across my roof and had it going all over my house. Then he drilled holes all over the place. When he finally got the wire in to the house he just left it ddangling from the window. He also left saw dust from all the holes he drilled and little bits and peices of wires and stuff all over the place.
Then on the second day a independent contractor form another cable company that was hired by RCN to install another cable modem came to install our second cable modem. The second guy actually knew what he was doing and said that the first guy did a retarted job. He said that your not suppose to drill all these holes and go across the roof. He said that we would have to take down the other cable modem and reinstall both of them. We then made an appointment for friday for both jobs.
Then on wednessday a RCN guy came to our house and left a note that said we were here to install your cable modem and they waited 40 mins but we were not home so they couldn't install it. What the hell is that? We didn't have an appointment on wednessday and no one said that anyone was coming. We complained to RCN and yelled at them for an hour.
Finally on friday another RCN guy came and had no idea what he was doing. we once again had to complain and eventually got the guy that knew what he was doing from the other cable company to come and install our cable modem. He brought his whole team and they did a great job.
After this installation the cable modem worked fine and I was very pleased with the cable modem. However my phone line was a different story.
Part of the RCNs package was a phoneline. This meant that we had to switch from bell atlantic. For 3 days no one could call my house. After about a week and many compaints to RCN we finally got the phone working.
Now a few weeks later I am pretty happy with what I got. Because I am on the internet alot and RCN is currently the only cable modem provider in my area I guess it was worth all the hassle. However if you are lucky enough to be able to choose someone else then try the other place first.
