I went to school at Humboldt State from 1990 - 1994. The school is a high quality institution and moderately priced in an area of affordable housing. All the right combinations right?
First off - the school has great programs. I was in forestry, top ranked in the country. The quality of the degree is best in the CSU system. Nice thing about the CSU is they are teaching schools so the professors there are there to teach not to do research so they vest alot more time into you. Facilities are great and my degree endowed great competency in me as demonstrated by my success in my profession. I would recommend Humboldt in any of its areas for its educational potential.
Now the bad thing is the radical element on the campus and the preponderance of the drug culture. You often feel like you are in a time machine back to the 60s. Lots of hippies and pot. Not a day goes by somebody is protesting something George Bush did. It is a very liberal campus as well as its city, Arcata. I would be concerned sending my child there as the area is full of drug use and crime and your child WILL be exposed to it. Homeless people abound in Arcata as well. Your child should be cautioned as to potential dangers. Nice thing though, Humboldt is not a party school, its just the cultural norm there.
Now that I said that, you'll think I'm crazy by recommending the university but it did good for me and I feel my dollars were well spent in a good program. The beauty of the area, in the middle of the Redwoods, also attracts students. Out of all the CSU campuses you will probably get more bang out of your buck at Humboldt, just check your kid's suitcases carefully when they come home!
