| magenta321's Full Review: Creative Technology Nomad Jukebox (6 GB) MP3 Playe... |
I never wanted an MP3 player. I had a computer. It had thousands of MP3s on it. I had a cd player. I had hundreds of disc for it. Life was good. Why disturb the status quo? Then it was my birthday, and princess that I am, I knew I was getting everything I wanted. Grandma was buying me a necklace, Mommy was buying me an MP3 player, and Daddy... well... Daddy had to get me something.
I always make my Dad get me very good presents. Among my recent birthday and Christmas gifts were the top of the line Rollerblades, a 3/4 length sheep-skin jacket from Wilsons, a saphire and ruby ring, etc. I have expensive tastes, and expect nice things. Unfortunately, there gets to be a point where you have everything. Especially when you are an only child.
That is why I decided I needed an MP3 player for my 23rd birthday. Daddies like to buy things which are technologically cutting-edge, and this MP3 player fit the bill. They also like to buy expensive things, so they can feel they bought the "best" present. This fit that bill as well.
I originally wanted the MP3 player so my father could get me "something." I really didn't care what it cost. I just wanted to know that I would be able to listen to music; lots and lots of music. I wanted to have those important songs (you know, the soundtrack of your life type of songs) whether I was in my house, my car, or stranded in an airport. I wanted to have my life filled with good music. The music I selected. The best of the best.
When I began looking at MP3 players, I did exactly what you are doing. I turned to Epinions. I found it hard to compare one with another. Did I need a voice recorder? How much storage space is enough? What is the size, and does it matter? From reading one person's Epinion on one MP3 player, and comparing it to another person's Epinion on a different one, I gained some perspective, but had more questions than answers. The next step was to go to the store and see for myself.
I walked into Circuit City, and asked the nearest pimple-faced teen in a red vest for his opinion. "I am shopping for my birthday present. I listen to a lot of music, and want to put it all on an MP3 player. I want it to be as small as possible. What do I want?"
"You want this one Ma'am."
Yes, that's right, he called me Ma'am. I can't stand people who have not learned how impolite that word is, especially to anyone under the age of forty. Oh, and that is right, he was pointing to the Nomad Jukebox.
"Why is that?"
"Because, it holds 6000mb"
"But it is much bigger than the other ones. This one fits on a keychain, and this one is made like a watch. They are much more portable."
"Well," pimple-puss replied as he sighed, "if that is what you care about, go with the Nike one. But really, all those ones are is flash. They can't hold any real amount of music."
"And this one will?"
"Yes, you will have no problem putting about 100 albums on there."
Now, I don't know about you, but that was the most exciting thing I had heard in a long time. The one little machine, which is about the average size of a Sony Discman, was going to hold a good portion of my cd collection. Now, I was sold.
I quickly purchased the MP3 player (Daddy can reimburse me by my birthday), and took it home to show him what he got me. I think he was even more excited than I was. The next thing I knew, he was off hiding it in an obscure part of the house, least I be tempted to tamper with it before my birthday.
When my birthday came, I was too rushed to deal with setting up this new piece of technology. I worked all day, came home, took a shower, and got ready to go out. My father harassed me. He was excited about my gift. "Aren't you going to use your MP3 player?"
"Huh? Yeah, but not tonight. I don't have time to deal with setting it up."
Over the next three days, I spent five minutes here and ten minutes there setting the thing up. Each day my father got more and more ancy about my using it, and each day I grew more and more frustrated. Oh, don't get me wrong, the software was good, but after each thing was installed, another one popped up. This isn't good when you are already late for work and are just trying to set the thing up quick so your father will get off your back.
Once all the software was setup, I was finally able to start putting my cds onto the MP3 player. My problem was, my dad wanted to see me using the thing, and kept hounding me about it, and each day I had about twenty minutes free to play with the darned thing. That is not enough time to properly tinker with a new electronic device. I had a very hard time trying to get things copied from one cd and onto the other.
For a few days, I thought my MP3 player was defective. I thought about returning it to the store. Nothing was wrong with it. Something was wrong with me. I was not giving it the time or attention it needed. Now, using this MP3 player was not brain surgery, but it did require a little bit of attention.
Now that I have given my MP3 player the time and attention it needed, I have found that it is easy to use and works great! I loaded on a bunch of songs, and erased some of the ones which were already programmed into it. I have loaded songs from cds onto it, as well as MP3s I got off the internet. Once I learned how to do it, it was easy as pie to put things onto my MP3 player.
I also got an adapter so I could use my MP3 player in my car. If you ever had a portable cd player and the attachment that made it work in your car (a cassette-tape-like thing with a wire that plugs into the cd player), then you have the attachment to make your MP3 player work in your car. My boyfriend is always delighted by this. We both have extremely ecclectic musical tastes, so whether we want to hear the Grateful Dead, Lauren Hill, Al Hirt, or Billie Holiday, it's all on there.
My biggest problem with this MP3 player, however, is the battery life. The batteries are rechargable (thank God), so each night, I have to plug the puppy in and charge it. The charge lasts about four hours, supposedly, but it always seems like less. Whenever I am counting on my MP3 player being there for me, I am left musicless. Four hours of music sounds like a lot, but believe me, it is not.
Because of this, I have not used my MP3 player in about a month. It was just too much to always charge it, and only have it last for a few hours. It became too frustrating. I am sure I will use it again, but right now, I am just burnt out with always having to charge it. I do have a plug which goes from the cd player or MP3 player into the cigarette lighter, but this does not give my MP3 player any power. The only thing that does give it power is batteries... lots and lots of batteries.
