| virgilatmit's Full Review: D-link DMP-100 (32 MB) MP3 Player |
I bought the DMP-100 because, like other people, an MP3 player for under $50 sounded pretty good. However, this MP3 player certainly fits the title "you get what you pay for." I tried for over a week to get this MP3 player to work with my laptop (which also happens to be my only computer). Even with my laptop switched to Enhanced Parallel Port mode, I still was not able to upload songs onto the DMP-100. After communicating via email D-Link's technical support, it soon became obvious to me that they are aware that their MP3 players don't work with all computers, but they are unwilling to invest the time to fix this problem. I also looked on CNET's message boards, and soon realized that many other users (mainly with laptops) couldn't get the DMP-100 to work with their computers as well. So, if you're considering this MP3 player, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE RETURN POLICY!
One other note: I looked in the manual that came with this player, and, while one could use Smart Media cards to upgrade the memory, apparently these SM cards could not be used for anything else (eg digital cameras). There was a little ambiguity in this statement, so I contacted technical support, who seemed to indicate that I could not use the SM card in my digital camera anymore if I format it to use in the DLINK DMP-100! I have not actually tested the veracity of this statement, especially since, 32 MB SM cards are $50 a pop.
As you might expect, my overall experience with the DMP-100 was quite negative. I'm sticking with known brands in the MP3 player field. (For instance, I have enjoyed using the Rio 500, which comes with 64 MB, and in which I can use my 32 MB SM card without problem when I transfer the card in my camera. But that's a different review)
