Pros: Pretty full-featured. Light.
Cons: Anti-skip is touchy, CDs need to be cleaner than clean.
The Bottom Line: Good features, but it won't take abuse.

| livewire_'s Full Review: JVC XL-PG31 Personal CD Player |
I've used JVC portable CD players before. I always liked them for their price, compact size and features. What I didn't like was the flimsy construction of some of the lesser models. Also, I've always found the anti-skip on JVCs to be kind of spotty. What's the point of making an anti-skip CD player that won't hold up to the abuse a jogger will dole out?
When i saw this one on the store shelf, my first thought was that it was quite large in comparison with other JVC models. Very bulky, but for the use I was considering it for -- a car CD player to plug into a cassette player -- I thought it might be ideal. The buttons are laid out in a very sensible configuration so I could mount it with velcro. The perfect Christmas present for my dad.
Naturally, he loved the idea. He connected it with no problem at all -- which I take to mean that it's simpler to set up than most -- and had it up and running without any help.
After the first week of use, he complained to me that it was skipping. I had to test the thing out for myself. What I found was that when starting from track 1, the anti-skip is empty. If you hit a bump at this time, the player will skip. Also, any fingerprints or smudges on the disc will cause the player to skip. You have to make sure you Windex all your discs before leaving the house.
The whole point in buying this player was to enjoy skip-free playing while driving. The player has not lived up to that expectation. So, having bought a new car last month, I have given my dad my old Panasonic 405. Problem solved.
What really hurts about this is that the JVC has 40 seconds of memory, where the Panasonic only has 10. I would say that the quality of construction of the two units is the whole difference. The Panasonic is simply more solid (not to mention nearly waterproof!)
