Ed.Williamson's Full Review: Escort Passport 7500 Radar Detector
I bought the Escort 7500 in order to gain some knowledge. I like to know when I am being scanned by someone's radar gun. Knowledge is power. Although I respect authority figures, I want to know where they are. It might be useful to know where they are. And besides, it's kinda fun. It keeps you from going asleep at the wheel.
I am not by nature a "speeder". Most American passenger cars are not built for nor is the chassis and suspension and tires, etc. configured for nor are most of the vehicles maintained for race-level performance at high speeds, so speeding in them is about as smart as playing Russian roulette with a Glock 9mm. 50,000 Americans die every year on the roads and a lot of them are people speeding who have no understanding whatsoever of what the mechanical status of their vehicle is, and something on their dream machine may be just about ready to break, so if they are at speed they increase the odds that they will kill themselves or someone else. Another reason I don't like to speed is that there are too many other "Nervous-Nellie" drivers on the road who don't know how to be on the same road with a car at high speed, and they can do nutzo things like freezing up or swerving into your way like a scared jackrabbit or a deer jumping out at you and that too is a hazard. The highway is no place for amateurs when it comes to speed--either as the speeder or the crash-ee. I also have some respect for the speed laws, although at times I think some of them are a little weird in certain areas.
But no, most of the time I am "law and order" all the way, even with nutty speed laws, and even though I have had some experience at high speed driving, in racing situations. So though speeding is not something I normally do, still it is kind of nice to have the Escort 7500 up there on the dash.
The unit itself is a very effective and high-quality piece of electronic equipment. I especially like the new telephone-style power plug; the old one on my earlier Escort kept falling out, but this new one has a positive click-lock on it like a telephone. I don't use the little suction cup thingy for mounting it on the window glass that comes with it though. It may make it slightly less effective, but I mount it on the top of the dash with velcro strips. When I park, I can take it off immediately and stow it in its carry-bag out of sight.
Can it detect those who are scanning you effectively? You betcha. I have had no problems spotting the scanning vehicles and knowing where they are. It's kinda nice to have a high quality unit giving you the info. Makes you feel like Han Solo evading Darth and the Imperial Stormtroopers by outmaneuvering the tractor beam and all that. And, back in reality, it makes the drive a little safer and more interesting.
