| luckydriver's Full Review: Panasonic KX TC1870 900 MHz - Cordless Phone |
After returning a Uniden (poor answering machine voice quality), I happened upon this phone. Unfortunately the exact model has been discontinued, but I was lucky enough to get the last one at circuit city for $95. I think there is a new model available though (1871). The phone has a very good digital machine. The keypad on the base can be used while you are using the handset just like a corded phone. You can also check messages from your handset if you are not near the base. There is caller ID on the back of the handset so you can see who calls even when you are away from the base.
There is a volume control on both the handset and base for both the ringer and the voice. There are 10 programmable numbers on the handset and 5 on the base. The speakerphone works pretty good, in a quiet room I can be heard 8-10 feet from the base. There is an intercom feature that you can use whether you are on the base or handset. The handset fits very well in your hand and has a bit of weight to it. It doesn't feel cheap like some others do.
If you have a beeper, you can program the phone to beep you when you get a message at home but I have not tried this feature. About the only imperfection I could find in the phone is that there is noise when using the handset. When a person speaks, you can't hear the static/noise, but if there is silence, you can hear some noise. It is very tolerable but if you need 100% static free you should try another phone. However I sincerely doubt there is another phone on the market with these features.
It is also a true SST phone. You need to get an 1800 series phone if you want a digital one. The lower model ones have something called gigarange but they aren't digital. The only feature this phone needs is a beep that lets you know that you have messages waiting. Otherwise you will not be sorry you bought this phone or its successor.
UPDATE 8/01 I am very pleased with the phone. However the battery just died. This may or may not have something to do with the fact that I got the floor model since the phone was discontinued. With the new AT&T battery I am also going to be more vigilant about not charging until it says recharge, per the owner's manual. The answering machine is performing well. The static on the handset is very minimal and changing channels almost always does the trick. I still miss an audible alert for messages on the machine. I would get the phone again in a minute if they still made it. So if you can find one on the web somewhere, I don't think you'll be sorry.
UPDATE 9/03 The number 4 on the handset has stopped working. Other numbers are not so good either and it's 40 bucks for a new set from panasonic. We will be looking for a phone ASAP
