JohnSlough's Full Review: Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4.0D IF Lens
First, the info posted by epinions has nothing to do with this lens. It is NOT good for shy and dangerous animals. It does NOT provide 20 times magnification. At 28mm, it is a mild wide angle. It allows for shooting in crowded rooms, or getting more of the landscape in, or more of the tall building without the distortion caused by "looking up".
I bought this lens used for around $200, and have never regretted the choice. This was my first "wide angle" lens, but has become my "normal" lens. I rarely use my 50 mm anymore. At f/2, and with the high speed film available now, it is quite adequate for most available light situations. By the way, one problem with the wide angle is that the flash does not cover the entire frame evenly without a wide angle diffuser. Of course, the great depth of field doesn't hurt.
It has aperature range from f/22 to f/2, a filter size of 52mm, and weighs 12 oz.
