| surferdude7's Full Review: Hitachi DV-P505U DVD Player |
A friend of mine asked me to come and check out his new DVD player. He had just bought the Hitachi DVP505U 2000 Model.
I brought along a few of my movies since he has only two with his new DVD Player.
It is a typical looking DVD player that holds only one DVD or Music CD at a time. We put in Days of Thunder and it wasn’t but about two minutes and I noticed it hesitated just a little bit. After about 15 minutes of playing time it seemed to hesitate about 5 or six times, finally I said let’s see if the DVD has any dirt on it. Well the DVD looked clean and I wiped it anyway, then we put it back in and within a couple of minutes it started it again.
Next I put in X-MEN and it also had the same problems. Now X-MEN and Days of Thunder are my movies and I have never had any problems with it. My friend and I went back to my house to try the movies on my DVD player and guess what they did not hesitate at all. So now I suspect his player is misaligned or something like that.
We spent almost a whole day trying to figure out what the problem is.
We took it back to the place where he purchased it and they said they have had a lot of this model returned. They took it back and he bought him an RCA and it plays beautifully. I will have to give a review on his RCA after he has it awhile and I can check it out better for myself.
I can’t understand it, Hitachi makes some of the best big screen TVs on the market and they have a sorry DVD player. I would not recommend this model to anyone. Some other Hitachi DVD players may be great but be sure to get some facts before you buy one.
Here is some information about the Hitachi DVP505U 2000 DVD player if you are interested.
There is a Digital zoom that lets you enlarge an area that you wish up to 4 times. This is very nice and it seemed to work just fine.
The fast forward and reverse searches were very smooth without any lines showing on your screen and when you pause a frame it was crystal clear. There are four different fast search speeds and you can slow down the picture in three different speeds. Once you freeze a frame you can move it one frame at a time.
The remote was not to my liking, it could be I just wasn’t use to the location of all the buttons.
It runs at two times the speed for better performance. (Maybe if it ran the normal speed there wouldn’t be any problems.)
A built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 Channel Decoder (AC-3), this means you don’t have to go out and buy a receiver to get your true Dolby 5.1 sound. There are 6 audio direct hookups for 5-speakers and the subwoofer. Then there is a Optical and Coaxial output for the audio, if you wish to hook it to a separate receiver. (Optical is the best way to go, one fiber optic cable will connect your 5-speakers and 1-sub-woofer to your receiver.)
DTS ready, which means you, would have to buy a DTS receiver to listen to true DST sound.
For video you have 3 outputs, Component, Composite and S-Video Output.
Other features are Multi-Language - Subtitle Function, Vocal Function and On-Screen Display. There is also Multiple Angle Viewing and a built-in Screen Saver. (The screen saver comes on if you pause it and are not back it a certain amount of time.)
Overall
They seem to have problems with this model. On down the road they may have all the problems fixed.
It has some pluses like the A built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 Channel Decoder. It is also suppose to play Mp3 files, we didn’t check this out. It did play music CDs without any problems.
A lot of TV manufactures have other manufactures making components for them and placing their name on it, I think this is a good possibility. Hitachi has a good name and you rarely hear any complaints about them.
I was a little hesitant to write a negative review but, people need to know the facts.
My advice on anything you buy is, be sure you can take it back without any problems. Ask how many days you have to return it without any questions asked. Most stores will give you 15 to 30 days to return it.
