| leo8's Full Review: Pioneer DV-333 DVD Player |
After reading (mostly) great reviews about the DV-333, I decided to go ahead and buy it. I bought it at a major electronics store. I was pleased that I got a great deal, since it came with a free music DVD thrown in. I also bought the Matrix DVD as a reference, having heard that 'if it can play the Matrix, it can handle everything else..'.
Anyway, after getting home I hooked it up to my 27 inch Sony TV and popped in the Matrix DVD. As soon as the tray closed, the player started emitting a very loud whirring sound, as if the the disc was jumping all over the place! Its difficult to describe the sound, but it sounded as if something had broken loose inside. After a few seconds, the tray slid out and the power went off. I thought maybe I had stupidly placed the disc facing the wrong way, and spent the next ten minutes reading the manual in detail. It mentioned quite clearly to place the disc on the tray with the label side facing up. So I tried again but nothing seemed to work.
I took the set back to the store and at first I had decided to exchange it for the Philips 711 DVD player, but the sales guy persuaded me (after a lengthy discussion) to give the pioneer DV333 another try.... I gave in and took a new set home, but only after hooking up the new set to a high resolution Hitachi monitor in the store, and previewing various chapters of 'The Matrix' DVD. Everything seemed to be in order.
I have been using the DV333 rigorously over the past few days and have had no troubles yet. The pictures are sharp, the sound is clear. I compared it to my friend's pioneer DV302 and saw no difference in audio-video quality. The back panel is very sturdy and there is no annoying humming sound while playing DVD's, as I have noticed this in other brands.
All the necessary audio and video outputs are present, including coaxial and optical audio and s and component video. This player has convenient features like zoom and angle controls on the remote. The DV333 may not have features like the new nuon technology or HDCD capability for which you may have to dish out a hundred bucks extra, but I am prepared to wait a few years while these formats become industry standards and prices come down....(look what happened to DIVX technology!!)
The only gripes I had was the remote which is small and cluttered. The buttons are miniscule and indistinguishable in the dark, but I have noticed this problem in other players too.
All said and done, I recommend you buy the DV 333 if you need a good quality player at a decent price.
