Pros: Filmlike detail accurate color. Fine edge detail
Cons: Clumsy front panel controls
The Bottom Line: The 9000ES is a good core player for a mid-high end home theater. The SACD sound will make you fall in love with audio again.

| tobago45's Full Review: Sony DVP-S9000 ES DVD Player |
When I was in my twenties I made my living selling high-end audio and video. That was twenty years ago. Sony rarely disappointed then and they seldom do now.
Now that My family is moving to high definition video (after an 18 month wait to let the standards settle down) we are researching the monitors, satellite receivers and dvd players in earnest.
I had wanted to purchase a Pioneer DVD player based on great experience with the Elite series of products. But the Sony won this battle.
We always start out when changing equipment with the source first. Be it satellite or DVD or tape always go With the best you can get. Despite its high price and clumsy controls (the buttons are simply awful however the tray is nice.) the Sony DVP-S9000ES is right now the best DVD player in the world for the money. How do I judge this? Simple, on HD plasma, on a HD crt, or HD projector The Sony consistently LOOKED BETTER! I attribute this to the internal scaler which does a good job keeping the digital signal clean without too many artifacts.
Most people don't realize that progressive scan 480P is the best quality the consumer can get with prerecorded materials. I purchased recently a Sony Plasma monitor to go with this player. The combination is quite good very pleasing to watch. To impress your enemies 'Lost in Space" is a good demo. The only real negative with my setup is the quality of the DVD really matters now. Every flaw is apparent. This is the price you pay in seeing all the detail available. But if the DVD transfer is good the picture is a feast for the eyes, almost photographic in quality.
Then there is the sound... as more source material becomes available you will use the Sony more for music than just video.
After ignoring the analog audio output at first I hooked it up to a mid fi pioneer audio system. I then inserted the sampler disk(included). I could not believe it! It sounded like a high quality analog recording. The dynamic range was wonderful. For those newbies dynamic range is the range from quiet to full volume of the recording itself. Standard cd's have a dynamic range of about 90db whereas the sacd recordings have a range of about 120db. Have you heard the old timers say that high quality vinyl sounded better than cd's? this is part of the reason. The sampler had some Miles Davis, "WOW". We ended up buying another 9000 es to go with a mcintosh pre amp and power amp setup. The sound is simply wonderful.
