| dkozin's Full Review: Toshiba SD-2300 DVD Player |
Toshiba SD2300 DVD player has a new feature called NUON compatibility. We are starting to see the game consoles and DVD players merge. PS2 plays DVD discs, but now DVD players starting to be able to allow you to play games.
SD2300 is very similar to SD1600 in terms of basic features.
Toshiba is well-known for excellent DVD players that produce very good picture and sound. SD2300 is no exception in this department.
SD2300 has the composite, S-video outputs and ColorStream component jacks. The best way to connect DVD player to TV is to use component-video outputs but even S-video output looks great on this player.
“Parallel Vidoe Output” allows you to watch the movie on several TVs/Monitors at once by connecting to them using S-Video, component (ColorStream) and composite outs.
As other Toshiba models, the player features the onscreen bit-rate meter, which fluctuates from less than 1 to 10, and although it's useless, it's nice to look at it once in a while.
PLUGE allows the player to pass “blacker-than-black” signals to your TV than needed, eliminating the gray color in places where the black color should be. All Toshiba DVD players have a video black-level enhancement mode that you can access from the menu.
The SD2300 is Dolby Digital and Digital Theater Sound (DTS) compatible. The player has other “standard” features, present on virtually all DVD players today: parental control, CD-audio playback, camera angle select, multi-language and multi-subtitle select, Spatializer N-2-2 Virtual Surround Sound.
It also has some advanced features (“trick play”): x2 playback, 1/8x, 1/4x, 1/2x, x2, x8, x20 Forward and Reverse scan, 16-Power Picture Zoom, Time Search, Strobe.
In addition, the player features HDCD® Decoding and Precision Filtering – the ability to play HDCD-enhanced (20-bit) CDs. HDCD feature more detailed and realistic sound.
“Virtual Light Machine” can be activated during CD-Audio playback and displays up to 100 unique patterns that pulse and change in sync with the music. If you ever used WinAmp MP3 player on your computer with visualization plug-ins, you know what I mean.
NUON
The SD2300 has a 128-bit Nuon media processor that allows it to perform slow motion in forward and reverse direction in “fluid motion” (not as a series of “still frames”). You cannot find another player in this price range to be able to do this.
Note: Samsung DVDN2000 DVD player also features NUON support.
And in future you should be able to access interactive games and other interactive features (you have to use the NUON-compatible discs, which, as Toshiba promises, will soon be produced by Hollywood studios).
The front panel of the player has jacks for special NUON game controllers in anticipation of NUON-based games (existing games will be converted to NUON).
The onscreen context menus and virtual remote significantly simplify operation.
The remote size is OK, but you have to point the remote directly to the player for it to work. The button layout is good - Left/Right and Up/Down buttons are centrally placed, with the Enter button in the middle.
At $300, SD2300 is a bargain, according to what it can do for the money. The NUON is something new and very useful. If you want these features you can either get SD2300 or pay much more for another model.
