When I listen to music through a pair of headphones, I want the best quality sound I can get. I truly hate hearing hissing sounds because the headphones cannot handle bass loads or amplify treble sounds too much. Further, when I have headphones on, I never want to hear sounds coming from the environment that would take away from the music.
The AKG K 240 DF is the perfect example of what I look for in a pair of headphones. The sound quality is remarkably high, as they can handle any treble or bass loads without any adjustments. Listening to music with these phones on is like having a pair of high quality speakers strapped to your ears. They are designed to play sounds as they were recorded directionally. Thus, the drums from the left will play on the left side and the voice on the right will come from the right ear piece.
Also, they are incredibly comfortable to wear. Lots of headphones will press into your ears uncomfortable because the ear cups are too small or not well padded. The earcups on these headphones are well padded (almost like pillows), big enough to fit your ears into so that they don't press uncomfortably, and it is adjustable to fit any size head.
These phones also come equipped with very long wiring (approximately 9-10 feet). While this can at times be cumbersome because it might get tangled up, I'd rather have too much wiring than not enough because it allows mobility and more comfort while listening. One great aspect about the wiring is it does NOT use coiling. It is a simple long wire, so tangling is only likely to occur because the wire is long, not because of the irresistible urge to coil up, as is common with many stereo headphones.
The phones are equipped with a stereo style plug (the fat kind) because the phone are originally intended to be studio headphones. You can use these to listen to music loudly so as to not disturb your neighbors, or you can record music and use these to check in on a recording without having to play it aloud. Also, however, you can convert the plug by going to Radio Shack, Best Buy, Target or any electronics store and buying a 2 dollar conversion piece. Doing so will allow you to make these headphones usable on a portable discman or cassette player. Personally, I love to take these phones with my discman to the library. This way I can get work done and not be distracted by the sounds coming from people around me.
Overall, these are one of the best headphone I've had the privilege to which to listen. Great sound and comfort are the two best qualities of these phones. $200 is a lot of money to spend on a pair of headphones, but if you're going to get quality headphones, these are the ones to get.
