| wilco42's Full Review: Denon AHD-950 Headphones |
a couple of years ago, after my sony headphones sneakily scooted under my foot while i was stumbling around in my room and met a rather untimely demise, i decided to get new headphones. i had just recently bought a new receiver and cd changer and was eager to try out a new pair of headphones. the denon ahd-950s were my choice after careful consideration...and i've loved them since.
i had two basic requirements for the headphones i wanted to buy. one requirement i had when purchasing headphones is a single cable coming out from the headphones. though this may seem obvious for those looking for headphones, for the inexperienced, it may not be an initial consideration. i hate it when cables get tangled around, or when they nip along your neck as you are bopping along to your favorite tunes.
the other requirement i had was that the headphones must cancel out all ambient noise so that i can listen to my music in peace...without disturbing other people around me. this immediately eliminated the open air type constructed heaphones, as they will not do much to deafen ambient noise or to keep quiet your music for others.
pros:
these headphones are amazing. the sound reproduction compared to any other headphone i've ever used is simply amazing. what does a 2Hz - 31kHz response give you? amazingly clear audio in all levels of the sound spectrum. you can have a deep, rich bass that doesn't overpower the soulful vocals of your favorite singer. the beating of the drums in nine inch nails' head like a hole can be heard distinctly and clearly, while Jewel sounds soulful and mesmerizing instead of whiney and annoying on cheaper speakers. i believe that those people who believe Jewel is a whiney brat only believe so because they haven't heard Jewel on a pair of these headphones..if they did, their opinion of her music would instantly change.
outside noise is deafened as soon as you put on the headphones, and once any music is playing, it's hard to make out anything but what is coming in from your headphones. the ahd-950s utilize vaporized diamond diaphragms and besides sounding like some cool futuristic material, they deliver amazingly crisp and clear audio.
and these headphones are comfortable. the oval ear pads come with extra cushioning which hug around the ears providing for maximum comfort. the headband is also cushioned, so any part of the headphone that touches you has more than ample padding. as with any padding, i was afraid that the padding cloth would wear out easily and begin to peel. but i've had these headphones for over 3 years now without any problems. they are quite durable and have survived several falls and misplaced feet.
the cable is long enough to comfortably extend from my receiver to my bed, where i can listen to my music in peace without having the neighbors bang down on my door.
cons:
these headphones are definitely not for the value shopper. but for the audiophile, they are a welcome addition.
comfort is a subjective thing. my brother used these headphones and found them very uncomfortable, complaining that they heated his ears up like an oven.
the headphones are huge! there's no way you are going to misplace these headphones, but carrying them around aren't as easy as other headphones since they don't fold up. so if size matters to you, this pair of headphones may be too bulky for your tastes.
conclusion:
these headphones are great. if you are in the market for a great pair of high end, closed construction headphones, and price isn't an issue, these are the pair for you. the denon ahd-950's provide for great sound reproduction and a wonderful listening experience.
