Nearly two years ago I was in the market for a new home theater receiver. I went with Yamaha and also bought the Yamaha CDC-665 CD changer. The sound quality when playing music through my receiver and (Australian made) Krix speakers is excellent. I've been very happy with this five-disc changer and I love the Playxchange feature.
As the name suggests, Playxchange allows you to open the CD draw while a disc is playing. The four CD's that are not in use can then be changed, providing you own more than 5 CD's!
It's easy to select which disc you want to play via the remote or buttons on the front of the unit. The CDC-665 features an optical display, which shows the carousel position. I keep the current CD selection on top of the player (standing up, half open) so that I can select the CD with the remote from the comfort of my beanbag.
Programmable play is also possible. I often play all my favorite tracks from the selected CD’s. The easy to follow owner’s manual may need to be opened to learn how to do this, but it’s worth the effort.
This player features an output level (volume) controller on both the CD player and the remote. The output level is shown in the optical display. I found this to be a very handy feature. When watching TV, I play CD’s during the add breaks. The output level can be set so that the volumes for both CD and TV/VCR audio are the same. The output level controller is very useful if you plan on using headphones with this unit. If other family members are using the receiver, just plug the headphones directly into the CD player and adjust the volume to suit.
The remote is small and easy to use. With the remote it's possible to select one disc random or five disc random. There is about a five to seven second wait while the next CD and track are selected. This delay is the only down-side to having a carousel CD changer. The remote also controls the other display functions such as showing total CD play-time, track time or time remaining. It even controls the display brightness. Programmable play is also possible from the remote. About the only thing not possible with the remote is turning the power off and on. I’m sorry, but to do that your going to have to stand up and walk!
The connections in the back are very easy to set up. There are left and right audio outs and a digital audio out. If your receiver has an optical in connection, this is the best setup option.
If you have a Yamaha compatible cassette tape player this unit will allow CD synchronized recording. This feature allows dubbing of CD to tape very easily. I don’t have a tape player so I can’t really comment on this feature, but from what I read in the owner’s manual it sounds very easy to use.
One thing to remember if you move house. Remember to take your CD’s out before packing up the CD player. I made the mistake of leaving some CD’s in the player during transit. I ended up having to get it repaired as one of the discs jammed the draw.
The unit is black in color and is 430mm wide. This is the same width as most VCR's and DVD players, so if you want to stack all of your hardware it will not look out of place. This is a good looking, well made piece of audio equipment, which I thoroughly recommend.
