| mopar_man's Full Review: Panasonic ShockWave SL-SW870 Personal CD Player |
I’ve always loved the gimmicks and when I started looking for a portable CD player I found this one and just had to have it.
The headphones weren’t the only reason though.
I needed something with a robust anti-shock and that could take some abuse. When I first got home and put in a CD I loved the VMSS headphones, however after 30 minutes my ears hurt due to the fact that to keep the VMSS system firmly planted on the back of your neck the head phone are spring loaded and tug on your ears and I also was tired of the thing beating on the back of my neck.
The VMSS (virtual motion sound system) is a switchable circuit that boost base frequency around 50 Hz and then transforms them into vibrations you feel on the back of your neck.
The headphones do have a nicely laid out remote and volume control located on them which means that you can change track or adjust the volume easily as your jogging or biking etc. without having to take the player out of your pocket.
One thing that is very noticeable was the weight of the CD player it had a hefty and quality feel to it. The unit maybe slightly heavier than some prefer and it is not super thin but I think it is sized just right. The latching on the player is also a nice touch you’ll never worry about this thing popping open during use. The buttons are large and easy to use and the included LCD display has a nice readout, however I would have like to see it backlit somehow.
The durability is outstanding I’ve dropped the thing, kicked it, stepped on it, sat on it, and the player keeping coming back for more it is amazing. I love to go mountain biking and with most CD players they skip over bumpy terrain, but not this one I’ve encountered no skipping problems when biking, it doesn’t even skip when I end up falling off my bike. Battery life is impressive 25 hours of playback.
The player has 3 EQ setting: extra base, VMSS, and regular. The sound quality of the headphones are fine however I decide to purchase a pair aiwa noise canceling headphones which blow the included head phone away, but they are much larger and you loose the convenient remote. I use both headphones alternately the aiwa headphones in the long car trips and plane flights and the VMSS when walking, biking, or when I don’t want to carry the big aiwa headphones with me
I’ve owned the CD player for 2 years and have had no problems whatsoever and the unit still looks as good as it did when I got. This is a quality product and I would recommend it to any one looking for and upper end portable CD player. As for the headphones I would go ahead and get the VMSS its only 30 dollars more and you can always replace them if you don’t like them with a conventional pair. They are really cool and I've love them now, but they can get uncomfortable over long periods of time.
Copy and paste this address to go to Panasonics web site and you can view all of their products. As far as the brand I’ve owned many Panasonic products and have been happy with every one.
