| Todd's Full Review: Panasonic SL-SX460 Personal CD Player |
I have spent the last 6 years listening and testing portable cd players to work with portable headphone amps. For the last 4 years the Panasonic models have been the best sounding units on the market. The SL-SX460 continues in that line of great sounding portable cd players. It has a 40 second anti-shock memory. It takes a pretty good jolt to cause it to skip and is relatively silent when engaged. That is to say it does not appear to degrade the sound when the anti skip is in use. It has 3 EQ settings - one delivers extra but distorted bass, another is a live setting which rolls back the midrange a bit and the normal setting which is prefered. It has very good balance from highs to lows with a nice midrange. It has a memory/recall switch, a repeat switch, forward and reverse switch as well as play/hold and a power off switch. These are located on the top of the player. This can be a problem if the players is kept in a carrying bag. Fortunately there is a hold switch on the right side of the player that will lock in the functions desired. Also on the side of the player is a switch that allows you to chose resume/normal or random play. It has a mini headphone jack output as well as a line out. The lid locks with a slide switch in the front of the player.
It will run for over 10 hours on 2 AAA batteries and an additional 15-20 hours can be added by attaching a supplied battery pack to the back of the player. An AC adapter is also supplied. 2 AAA rechargeable batteries come with the unit but I found them to be junk and use alkaline batteries instead.
The headphones supplied with the player are ready for the landfill. A pair of Koss Porta Pro or Grado SR-60 sound great out of this player as do the Etymotic ER4P. Using it as a source via the line out into a headphone amp allows for an excellent portable listening system. Any top of the line dynamic headphone can be used such as the Sennheiser 600 or Etymotic ER4S to achieve sound rivaling a speaker system costing 10 times more.
This is THE portable player to have if accurate, detailed sound is desired.
